Ed Clements Fishing Report Updated 12/21/11
Last Chance Open Water Fishing The past couple of weeks on Saginaw Bay have been very good for walleye trolling; and the mouth of the Saginaw River has been steady for perch. Walleyes have been taken consistently in 12-18 foot of water, two to three miles out from Bay City to Linwood. The fish are in roaming schools gorging on shad; find a school of fish and a limit will come in quick order. Water temperatures are around 35-37 degrees so slow trolling is a must. Try keeping your speed around 1 mph. Stickbaits have been producing the best action: Rapala Deep Husky Jerks, Storm Deep Thundersticks, and Smithwick Rogues have all been putting fish in the boat. Any color variation that includes purple has worked well, along with clown and firetiger. Running multiple lines on Church Tackle Walleye Boards has been a difference maker during the late fall. Presenting 6-8 baits while trolling makes a big difference in your catch rate; in the cooler temperatures the fish are turning on and off all day long; being able to put a lot of lures in the water and getting them in front of feeding fish is paramount to success. It looks like the milder weather is going to hold for a few more days, so if your boat is still ready, get out and go. Please remember safety first, December fishing and colder air and water temperatures adds to the danger factor. Make sure you tell someone where you are going and when you plan to be in, keep your cell phone dry and handy. Perch are biting on minnows around the mouth of the Saginaw River and in the marinas and cuts that lead to Saginaw Bay. This has been one of the best years for perch that I have seen in a long time. Limits of 8-12" perch have been the norm and it has been consistent all fall.
Good Luck & Good Fishing
